How is the Breston Academy Scheveningen arise?
Carla Krutzen has given training and courses until 1986 on the Monday evenings at The Hague Free Academy of fine arts, then located in De Gheijnstraat.
Peggy Bannenberg was her successor, until the relocation of the academy in 1987 to the Paviljoensgracht. At this location the course was finished because of budget cuts.
In response on this, 4 students of Carla from the Monday evening asked her to teach again.
On the 1st of August 1988 Carla hired, together with the jazz pianist Hein van der Gaag, the warehouse on the courtyard at the Maaswijkstraat 92 in Scheveningen, Hein took the ground floor and Carla came on the 1st floor and the attic. Carla's lessons started on the 1st of October 1988 with these 4 students: Betty Valk, Carlie Veldhuis Kroeze, Yoka Voorbach en Margriet van den Hoonaard.
To help her sick friend Bas, Carla went to Canada in August 1990 to retrieve the Siberian husky Breston Sauga Sampson, born at the 26th of June 1987 and with the brand 6UE2VRF.
With the celebration of the 1st lustrum of Carla’s academy in 1993, the name Breston Academy Scheveningen, the B.A.S. called after his old master, is arise.
This name was registered between May 1st 2000 and December 31st 2013 in the trade register of the Chamber of Commerce with the file number 27188953 and with the description: giving training and courses in the field of design in metal and between October 24th 2000 and March 3rd 2014, this name was also registered in the Benelux Office for Intellectual Property, registration number 0674440 with the above company description and with Carla's master character as logo.
Breston, 13 years old, passed away on September 8th 2000.
For the talented students it was possible to sit a final examination. The first time this examination took place was in 2001 and in 2013 it was for the 5th and last time. The adjudication committee consists of three professional designers in metal. One sculptor and two jewellers judge the work on technique, design and originality. 10 Students have obtained successfully this examination: Els Albersen, Kees Beck and Tette Hemminga in 2001, Beatrix Verloop, Mirjam Bentvelzen-de Lange, Peter Goddijn and Pieter Verkaik in 2002, Wim Verbakel in 2006, Liesbeth Hendriks in 2011 and Hanne Bruun in 2013.
The 25th and last course year became 2012-2013.
This year started with a “Silver Exhibition” of 12 students/artists who where or have been connected with the B.A.S. between 1988 and 2014, carried out by Jantien Brinkhorst-Heringa on September 30th 2012.
The closure was a big party, a musical performance by Cees Post, Hein van der Gaag and Tim O’Connor and a last exhibition of all students from the 25th course year on July 6th and 7th 2013.
Because of not one successor, this school was finished on January 1st 2014, the year Carla were 65 years old.
